It was a hot July afternoon, but Never-E-Nuff Acres had a great adoption event at the Petco in Cedar Hill!

Petco helps support Petfinder, which is an animal adoption site where we advertise our adoptable horses. They invited us to come out and hold an adoption event at their Cedar Hill store.

Two of our young mares, Trixie and Rosie, came to help promote the rescue and our adoption program. They had a great time meeting people, enjoyed getting petted and loved eating carrots! The weather was hot, but the mares did well relaxing in the shade under out portable tent.

We raised quite a bit of money for the rescue and also gave out plenty of fliers and information about the horses we currently have for adoption. We hope to do more Petco adoption events in the future. Watch our website for details, as we would love to see you there!

Pony Picture Day Fundraiser

On Saturday, May 22, 2010, we invited all of the Lil’ Cowboys and Cowgirls of Waxahachie out to Ark Country Store for a pony picture day fundraiser.

Professional photographer Dara Ratliff was there to take pictures of the kids in their Western gear and Ron Dumont of Blue Moon Carriage Co. in Midlothian gave carriage rides to the families.

Three of our horses, Rosie, Moody and Tilde, came too so that everyone could meet some of our adoptable horses. The horses did great and loved meeting everyone who came.

Even Chik-fil-A showed up, with free sandwiches and their mascot cow! Be sure to check out all of the the photos below.

The rescue owes a huge thank you to Candice Jones and the gang at Ark Country Store for hosting the event!

As well, a big thank you to our volunteers who made this possible:
Dara Ratliff for the outstanding photography
Glenn for loaning us Buttercup, the picture pony
Johnny for loaning us Lucy who was a big hit with the kids
Ron Dumont of Blue Moon Carriage Co. for providing rides
Cindy of 5 B Rodeo Co. for providing the chaps & props for the kids
Waxahachie’s Chik-fil-A for proving lunch
Rheta, Shirley, Phil, Kirsten, Cindy, Diane and Mary for helping run the event and help with the horses

Both were underweight and Chico also had skin problems and wounds. (See below for a picture of Chico when he arrived.) Their owner was going to shoot them and put their bodies in a burn pile. We got there just in time to save them from certain death! Based on their condition, we were hoping we weren’t too late for them to make a complete recovery. Since both were fairly young, they stood a good chance though.

Chico has made a full recovery and it doing great. He is a friendly donkey and gets along well with people, horses and other donkeys. Chico has great manners, loves attention and enjoys being brushed and scratched. He would love a home where he would get plenty of attention and where he could have another donkey around for company.

The breeder was going to just put him down, rather than deal with the hassle of an orphaned colt. One of the other brood mares we rescued adopted him and nursed both him and her own colt.

Moody is very sweet and friendly. (He is named after the man who rescued him, not his temperament!!) He loves people and attention and gets along great with the rest of the horses in the herd. Moody has had lots of handling and knows some ground work. He is easy to halter in the pasture and is good at leading, trailer loading and standing tied. He has also had his feet trimmed several times by our farrier and does great. Moody is currently working on basic ground work exercises. He would be a great project horse for someone looking for a young horse.

Moody is 13.2 hh as of June 2010. He is available for adoption to an approved home with horse experience only. A completed adoption application and a home visit are required before approval can be granted.

Gracie was probably severely abused before to coming to the rescue. She has numerous scars on her body and is still extremely skeptical of people We have been working with her and she has become more comfortable in our presence, sometimes even willing to come close enough to take a treat. However, she will probably never fully trust people. However, she is quite happy now that she gets to spend her days grazing with her pals Jim and Shadow, playing with the other horses in the pasture and bossing around our two yearlings, Moody and Tilde!

He had a great time when a Girl Scout troop came for a volunteer work day at the rescue in April 2010. He loved the attention as they worked to help him get rid of his thick winter coat!

Captain is having a great time living out his retirement at the rescue. He is doing great now that he’s on Thrive, a free choice, forage based feed. You wouldn’t know from looking at him that he was close to 30!

Captain would be available for adoption only to a very special home. As an older horse, he needs special attention and care in order to maintain a healthy weight. He is only available locally, within a 30 mile radius of the rescue, as frequent home visits would be required. Captain is still ridable for small children for short periods of time. He is a friendly, well mannered horse and would love to find a family who would shower him with love and attention!

Beau is currently turned out on a friend’s sixty acres where he is very happy to just get to be a horse. He now has a life of peace and no longer has to live in a constant state of fear.
